Signs Your Computer Has a Virus

Computer viruses can be detrimental and impact the security of your personal information, data or even finances. A highly-rated anti-virus program (yes, even for Macs) is always your best defense, but even still some viruses can slip through. It is important to be aware and vigilant about watching for the signs of a computer virus. Do you know what to look for?

Your machine may be compromised if you notice any of the following:

  • It is really slow (any there are no other signs of malfunctioning hardware or lack of storage space)

  • Applications do not work as they have in the past

  • Icons are unresponsive

  • Your machine reboots, crashes or freezes at times for no reason

  • Your anti-virus program has been disabled without your authorization, or you disabled and forgot to re-enable some time ago

  • You begin to get pop-up advertisements or warnings

  • You notice missing files or folders

  • You are unable to download or update anti-virus software
