The How-Tos of a Homepage Explainer Video

A homepage explainer video is one of the most efficient ways to cram a whole lot of information into a small space. As an added bonus, people who view these little videos are four times more likely to convert (i.e. use your service).

These explainer videos should describe what you do and what you offer in 60-90 seconds. Since this is most likely the first thing a new customer will view when they visit your web page, it's crucial to get it right!

Be sure you write the script using language that assumes the customer knows almost nothing about your product or service. Avoid technical jargon! If a client feels they can't understand what you're talking about, they are not likely to continue watching the video or pursuing your service. A good script should:

  • explain your product or service in 1-2 sentences

  • keep in mind the target audience

  • identify the issue or problem your product or service addresses

  • highlights a few key benefits (avoid product-specific features)

  • explains how to use the product or service in a few simple steps

  • maintains a specific tone (professional, casual, comedic etc.)

  • mentions a call to action (ex. call now, sign up today, buy now etc.)

This video should be as short, sweet and simple as possible. In fact, the less you say, the more likely people are to remember it. The idea is to hook the client and get them interested in the next step.

If you can, invest in a professional voice. Delivery is important! You don't want to lose clients over something as trivial as a voice that sounds mechanical or like it's being read from a script with no emotion.

Remember entertainment value! A professional video is great, but providing a memorable experience for your potential clients will go a long way. That said, don't go overboard with the visuals. Too much will distract from the message you are trying to convey.

The last thing to be sure you get right is the music. They say music is the language of the soul, so having musical accompaniment that sits well with your viewers is very important!
