Mobile-friendliness is ultra-high priority for websites these days, especially if you are running a business. Most consumers search for things on-the-go, using smart phones are tablets and because of their reduced screen size, what works well for a desktop display, is too much for a mobile device.
Here are a few tips to consider when ensuring your website it mobile-friendly:
Simplify: use only the essential elements for your mobile site and strip back the text. Busy backgrounds, icons, media and long text can be onerous and confusing on a mobile phone.
Make sure your theme works well on a mobile device: your background and menu bar might look killer on a computer, but it could really do the eyes a disservice on a smaller screen. When building or revamping your site, check the theme on all devices.
Nix the pop-ups and ads: we agree that pop-ups serve a purpose, but they can be difficult and frustrating to get past on a mobile device and eventually lead to your user abandoning ship when they can't hit the "x" with their gorilla fingers.
Use whitespace effectively: scrolling down can get tiresome if there are no visual breaks. Be sure to include lots of white space, especially around links and elements you want your users to pay attention to.
Don't Flash: Flash and some operating systems don't mesh too well; some phones don't support it at all, so it's best to avoid using it when possible, otherwise you are eliminating an entire user population from seeing your site.
Test and retest: test your mobile site in your builder and on various devices with different operating systems.
