As we look toward the New Year and begin thinking about face lifts for our sites, having a look at emerging trends in web design is pertinent. One of the more surprising web "fashions" are mega footers. Traditionally a footer is a narrow strip at the bottom with contact information and perhaps social and/or newsletter links.
Lately, we are seeing a growth in the physical size of these footers with much more information and engagement points packed in. This actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it. As we (as a society) grow more familiar with navigating websites, most know to scroll to the bottom of a site for this type of information. So why not pack in what you can?
The trick is not to overwhelm your users. The information MUST be organized clearly and intuitively. Use deliberate columns with obvious headings. In the photo example we provided above, wildsouls.gr/en, they do this well and throw in an interactive horizontal bar at the bottom to anchor the footer. Don't be afraid to use lines, grids and large font to get the organization of your footer across.
