What's in a Homepage?

If you do any maintenance on your website, be sure at the bare minimum you regularly update your home page. This is the landing page that anyone who navigates to your site should see first. It lets your viewers know who you are, what you do and where they need to go to find any other information they need.

Once upon a time, the goal was to get all of this information above "the fold", which is what the majority of viewers will see before they have to scroll down. Incidentally, the term "the fold" comes from newspapers and refers to what a reader would see before unfolding the newspaper. But marketing studies have shown this to no longer be a hard and fast rule. In fact, most website users will spend 3/4 of their time scrolling down at least two screen lengths for information. This means you have more space to direct users where you want them.

That does NOT mean you should cram as much into that space as possible, but that you can use more white space to emphasize the sections you do include. We recommend including the following sections on your home page:

  • Your business deliverables: what you do, who you do it for and why you do it best

  • Promotional video: cater to those who learn differently and use a video to provide people all the info in one small space

  • Your services: tell your visitors what you can do for them

  • Testimonials: show your visitors proof of client satisfaction

  • Feature: highlight a product or service that you want to promote

Be sure that when you do include these sections, that you do so in a manner that is intuitive to your users and easily navigable.
